Civic Engagement Workshop: How to Research During Elections
Dates: Sunday, October 11ᵗʰ & Sunday, October 18ᵗʰ Add-to-Calendar links ↓
Time: 1 – 3 PM
Location: Washington County Dems Office (140 NE 3rd Ave, Hillsboro, OR 97124)
Every election, voters are flooded with information, mailers, ads, endorsements, social media posts, and news coverage, all telling them who to support and why. Much of it comes from a source with a stake in the outcome. That does not make it worthless, but it does mean the choice of who to trust and what to believe should be yours, not something handed to you by whoever spent the most money reaching you.
This workshop will not tell you who to vote for. It will teach you how to cut through biased information, find sources you can trust, and build your own confident, well informed answer to a question only you can answer: who represents what matters to you.
What You Will Get Out of It
You will leave with a practical, repeatable process for researching any race, not just this election, but every one going forward. You will know where to look, how to weigh what you find, and how to separate a candidate’s own record from what their campaign or their opponents say about them.
What We Will Cover
- Why so much of what reaches voters comes from a biased source, and how to account for that without dismissing it entirely
- Where to find reliable, nonpartisan information: voter pamphlets, legislative records, campaign finance disclosures, and more
- How to evaluate what you find: where a candidate stands, whether it matches your own values, and whether they understand the office they are running for
- A short self assessment to help you get clear on your own priorities and the qualities you want in an elected official, before you start evaluating anyone else
- A simple framework for turning everything you have gathered into a decision you feel good about
- How to research ballot measures using the same approach
- The practical basics: when ballots arrive, where to return them, and how to track that yours was counted
Who Should Attend
Anyone who votes, or wants to start. Whether you have never missed an election or you regularly skip the races near the bottom of the ballot because you do not feel informed enough, this workshop is built for you.
